Designed for investors managing their own wealth

Morningstar Investor supports long-term investors who want to research opportunities, scrutinise their share, ETF and fund holdings, and maintain a clear view of their portfolio as their priorities evolve.

Research to inform you, not promote products

Morningstar aims to produce the most valuable, objective, and useful investor-focused research possible.

Morningstar safeguards this objectivity through transparent and rigorous methodologies, strict policies, thorough review processes and clearly defined team structures to ensure our research efforts align with end investors.

Transparent, rigorous methodologies, consistently applied

Morningstar analysts follow documented global methodologies and structured processes. These frameworks focus our analysis on the factors most relevant to long-term value and returns. The approach helps to reduce the influence of personal bias, popularity and market noise. Applying this structured approach consistently also gives investors a common basis for comparing opportunities across industries, markets and asset classes.

Our analysts determine the conclusions

Morningstar does not earn trading commissions when investors act on its research or investment-banking fees from the companies it covers. Our research and ratings reflect our analysts’ genuine assessment of an investment, including unfavourable views where warranted. Analysts cannot offer a favourable conclusion or delay changing a view in exchange for business. Companies do not pay Morningstar to cover their shares. Equity coverage reflects company size, likely investor interest, business quality and fit with our skills and knowledge. Some ETF and fund ratings in Australia and New Zealand are Issuer Initiated, meaning the issuer pays Morningstar to prepare the rating. These ratings are clearly identified, the fee is not linked to the outcome and the issuer has no influence over the analytical process or rating. The same analytical framework applies regardless of who initiates the coverage.

Review and debate built into the process

Our review process extends beyond the covering analyst. Analysts discuss and debate their reasoning with supervisors, senior research colleagues and, where applicable, formal ratings committees. This helps test assumptions, reduce the influence of individual bias and ensure our methodologies are applied objectively and consistently. For ETFs and funds, proposed qualitative ratings are reviewed and vetted by Ratings Committees, while major methodology decisions are overseen by the Ratings Council. For stocks, all new economic moat ratings and proposed changes are reviewed by Morningstar’s global moat committee, comprising senior members of the Equity Research team.

Research teams structured for objectivity

Morningstar’s Equity and Manager Research teams operate separately from sales and Investment Management. Their reporting lines and integrity policies are designed to protect analysts from pressure by other parts of the business and prevent commercial considerations from determining research conclusions. These policies also govern potential conflicts arising from analysts’ personal holdings and Morningstar’s commercial relationships. Relevant interests are disclosed and additional controls applied where required. Analysts cannot own shares in companies or industries they cover, likewise for any peer reviewers. This structure allows analysts to focus on producing clear, investor-focused research based on the evidence and documented methodology.

Rigorous research. Thoughtful insights.

Our analysts combine detailed analysis, careful judgement and repeatable processes to deliver deep, considered opinions and conclusions on each investment.

Ratings translate those key conclusions while the supporting research substantiates the reasoning, assumptions and outlook behind it – in plain English for all investors.

A disciplined research approach

Each investment is assessed through a defined and transparent methodology and structured framework. This guides analysts through the key stages of the research process and helps ensure consistent consideration of the factors most likely relevant to that investment. It creates a disciplined path from the underlying evidence and analysis to the final rating or valuation.

Focused on what matters

Our research considers the investment as a whole, bringing together the fundamental factors that shape its long-term prospects rather than relying on a single measure or metric. Nor past performance or simply the price. For stocks, analysts look beyond prices and simple valuation multiples to estimate intrinsic value of the likely future cash flows a company could generate. This is supported by analysis of the underlying business, competitive position, financial health, capital allocation, risk and uncertainty. For ETFs and funds, analysts look beyond past performance to assess the management team, investment process and organisation behind the strategy, together with its portfolio, fees and risks. Examining these factors together helps place individual data points in context and reveal strengths, trade-offs and risks that may be missed when viewed in isolation.

Start with the overview. Dig as deep as you like.

Ratings and concise summaries provide a clear overview of the investment and our analysts’ central view. Behind them is detailed research setting out the assumptions, evidence, substantiation, risks and outlook shaping the assessment. The information is structured in layers. You can start with the main points, then dig to examine the rationale behind the rating. See how the analyst reached their view, what it depends on and what could cause it to change, then form your own view.

Consider the investment from many angles

Our analysts reach a central view, while the research also sets out the evidence and arguments to support and challenge the investment case. For stocks, bull and bear cases show how different assumptions and developments could affect the outcome. For ETFs and funds, the analysis considers the strategy’s strengths, weaknesses and trade-offs, including how it may behave in different market environments. This gives you a more complete picture of where an investment appears strong, where risks or uncertainties remain and what could influence its long-term prospects.

Local knowledge. Global coverage.

Our Australian teams include 16 Equity Research analysts and strategists and 12 Manager Research analysts covering ETFs and funds. They form part of global teams of more than 130 equity analysts and more than 120 Manager Research analysts. Global methodologies and research standards help ensure investments are assessed consistently and conclusions are communicated clearly, wherever the investment is based.

Detailed analysis, from source material to insight

For stocks, our analysts examine company disclosures, build forecasts and valuation models, and draw on site visits and discussions with management and industry participants. For ETFs and funds, they analyse data and interview investment teams to assess the people, process, portfolio, fees and risks. They ask the questions that matter, focus on relevant information and recognise what can and cannot be known with confidence. Combining Morningstar’s methodologies with specialist knowledge and professional judgement, they form well-supported conclusions and explain their reasoning. Investors gain a considered perspective without having to reproduce work requiring significant time, specialist tools and financial expertise.
